Marie Harris

Biography

Marie Harris, an early member of Alice James Books the renowned poetry cooperative, was New Hampshire Poet Laureate from 1999-2004. In 2003, she co-produced the first-ever gathering of state poets laureate. She has served as writer-in-residence at elementary and secondary schools throughout New England. She has edited several poetry anthologies, including, with Kathleen Aguero, one of the first multi-cultural collections: An ear to the Ground: An Anthology of Contemporary American Poetry(University of Georgia Press, 1989). She is the author of four books of poetry, the most recent of which are Weasel in the Turkey Pen (Hanging Loose Press, 1992) and Your Sun, Manny: A Prose Poem Memoir (White Pine Press, 1999). Her two books for children are G is for Granite: A New Hampshire Alphabet (Sleeping Bear Press, 2002), and Primary Numbers: A New Hampshire Number Book (Sleeping Bear Press, 2004). She is currently working on a novel for young readers involving America’s first female composer, Amy Beach.
