Margo Berdeshevsky

Biography

Born in New York City, Margo Berdeshevsky has traveled the world. She currently lives in Paris, where she is considering conversations with Madame de Sevigne’s ghost who lurks, maybe, in the courtyard. Graduated from the High School of Performing Arts, attended Northwestern and New York Universities, trained as an actress in NYC by Lee Strasberg, she performed in world premieres of Harold Pinter’s “The Basement” & “Tea Party,” David Hare’s “Slag,” worked in the companies of Lincoln Center and Joseph Papp’s Public Theatre, toured the USA as Ophelia, was nominated for a television Emmy award. Berdeshevsky’s collection of poetry, But A Passage In Wilderness, was published by The Sheep Meadow Press (Decemeber 2007), who will also publish her next poetry book, Between Soul and Stone, (fall 2011.) Beautiful Soon Enough was published by University of Alabama Press, (2009) her collection of cutting edge poetic short stories, received FC2’s American Book Review/ Ronald Sukenick Award for Innovative Fiction. Other honors include the Robert H. Winner Award from the Poetry Society of America (selected by Marie Ponsot,) six Pushcart Prize nominations and two Pushcart “special mention citations,” the Chelsea Poetry Award, Persimmon Tree Magazine’s International Poetry Award, Kalliope’s Sue Saniel Elkind Award, places in the Pablo Neruda and Ann Stanford Awards (selected by Yusef Komunyakaa.) Her works are published in leading journals including AGNI, Pleiades, The Kenyon Review, Poetry International, New Letters, The Southern Review, Poetry Daily, Runes, Women’s Studies Quarterly, Nimrod, Chelsea, Kalliope, Southern California Anthology, Many Mountains Moving. Exhibitions of her “visual poems” were in Paris and in Hawaii. Her Tsunami Notebook of documentary photographs and poems was made following a journey to Sumatra in Spring 2005, to work in a survivors’ clinic in Aceh. A “cross genre” novel, Vagrant, is forthcoming from Red Hen Press in 2012.
